Saying goodbye to the days gone by can be a sign of strength to those of us who have had to face some fierce battles in 2013, which that probably covers just about all of us. However, that sign of strength isn’t a strength that comes naturally, it’s a strength that is given to us supernaturally.
When the battles rage against us we have the opportunity to run to a shelter of strength that can protect us, train us, and prepare us for those battles. We also have a choice to run to the countless other sources of false security and strength that the world offers, but can’t possibly compare to the One true source of all that we could ever need.
Our choice of direction has a great impact not only in the very moment of decision, but the future that lies ahead. Walking side by side with Christ through any battle can bring us to a great victory! Christ alone can conquer every obstacle, every barrier, and every threat the enemy throws our way, and walking in step with Him can only lead us to greater and higher paths! But when we choose the cheap knock offs that the world has to offer us we will find ourselves in a shabby shack rather than a shelter of refuge.
All this world has to offer will pass away but what God has to offer us is eternal! When we choose Christ we are choosing a high that we can get no other way, a satisfaction that is truly conquered, and we fulfill a longing that nothing of this world could ever fill, no matter how hard we try.
Christ never promised us this life would be easy, but He did promise He would be with us every step of the way and never leave us. What sweeter promise could ever bring so much life, hope, and joy?! When we find Him, the search is over! When we choose Him the battle is won and victory is ours for the taking! That doesn’t mean we won’t ever face another battle but we face it with the One who has already won the victory when He went to the cross and rose again!
As we move ahead into the new year, we can say goodbye to the days gone by because we are saying Hello to the future hope and plan that God has for us! We can walk straight into the future knowing that even though we don’t know what His plan is we know Him, and because we know who He is, we can walk with a smile on our face because of the joy in our hearts! His promises are true and the very bridge that carries us from one day to another.
We can cross that bridge believing and trusting in the promise of Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” But there’s so much more to that promise when we keep reading through verse 14, “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity.”
Here’s to 2014, the promises of God, and to the movement of our feet across the bridge to our divinely planned future full of purpose and a heart full of hope!
